Kay Carter, center, is the Volcano Club of Volcano doesnʻt do meetings, but she is there helping with just about every other Rotary activity we do, whether its cleaning up the highway, distributing food, or selling food at community events. She was given the award at a recent club meeting -- thatʻs the only way we could get her to come.   Presenting the award were District 5000 Governor Mark Merriam, left, and club president Lynda Gretz.

Hawaii Rotarians raise $2 million for Maui wildfire relief
Members of Rotary Clubs across the state have raised more than $2 million to  help survivors of the Maui wildfires in August. While Rotarians are known for their generosity and commitment to helping others, even District Gov. Mark Merriam said he was surprised that the clubs were able to raise so much money so quickly.
To date, more than $250,000 of that money has been committed from The Maui Fire Relief Fund for emergency relief, including $85,000 in gas and laundromat  cards given to families that lost their homes, $50,000 in specialized equipment for the only burn unit in the state at Straub Medical Center, and $30,000 to each of the three Lahaina Rotary Clubs so club members can make decisions on how best to help the community.
During a visit to our Rotary Club of Volcano last month, Merriam said the group knows it is going to take years for Maui to recover. Thatʻs why Rotary has set up a committee composed of active Maui Rotary leaders to consider written proposals for distribution of the funds for in the short term, intermediate recovery, and long-term community rebuilding projects. .
Maui Rotarians have been on the ground providing support and relief to survivors daily, working at disaster relief centers, community hubs, moving supplies, and assisting in other ways. In all, we here in Volcano are proud of the way people are coming together to help.  Itʻs a great example of the

Rotary to host Red Cross talk on rules of war

Ever try to make sense of military or humanitarian topics in today’s headlines?  Stories about POWs?  Refugee camps?  Cluster munitions?   War crimes?
The Rotary Club of Volcano is pleased to sponsor a community event that can shed some light on these and other aspects of International Humanitarian Law (IHL).  “Even War has Rules” is a talk prepared and presented by the American Red Cross.  It will be held at 8:30 Thursday morning, Nov. 2, 2023, at the Volcano Art Center, 19-4074 Old Volcano Rd, Volcano, HI 96785  (https://volcanoartcenter.org/).
This one-hour overview introduces fundamental principles of IHL that can clarify the rules governing conflicts around the world.
The presenter, Marc Bender, is an international development specialist who has served in the U.S. State Department, the United Nations, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, and non-governmental organizations.   His three decades in war zones and post-conflict environments—including Cambodia, Laos, Bosnia, Kosovo, Sudan, Somalia, Iraq, and Afghanistan—give him firsthand insights on many of these issues.
For information and to pre-register, please contact marc.bender@redcross.org; walk-ins are welcome.

Let Rotary help fly your flag

Hawaiʻi is one of the most patriotic states in the country, according to an analysis by the group WalletHub, and Rotary Club of Volcano members take our patriotism seriously. We begin each meeting with a pledge of allegiance, help raise the garrison flag at KMC on holidays and put up American flags at homes throughout the Volcano area on important holidays. More than 50 village residents have joined this fund-raising effort in which our members put up and take down American flags on your property on six holidays a yer times a year. Want to know how you can join your neighbors showing and show your patriotism? Send us an email at rotaryclubofvolcano@gmail.com and we’ll give you the details.

The 4th was with us!.  Aubrey decorated the Rotary Mobile and Alida played the part of Lady Liberty. Below, it takes almost the whole club to help put up the big Cooper Center tent for the  celebration at the end of the parade.  It's worth the effort.

A group of visiting Girl Scouts joined Rotary Club of Volcano on Memorial Day to help raise the garrison flag at Kilauea Military Camp, then helped plant dozens of smaller flags on the grounds.   Rotary Club members traditionally help with the flag raising at KMC on holidays like Memorial Day and the Fourth of July.

The Rotary Club of Volcano is partnering Sept. 24  with the community in Pahala i to place a new International Peace Pole near the entrance to the town.  A Peace Pole is an internationally-recognized symbol of the hopes and dreams of the human family, standing vigil in silent prayer for peace on earth. Each Peace Pole bears the message May Peace Prevail on Earth in different languages on each of its four or six sides. There are estimated over 250,000 Peace Poles in every country in the world, including one outside the Volcano Art Center,  Planting a Peace Pole is a way of bringing people together to inspire, awaken and uplift the human consciousness the world over and the Pahala dedication ceremony was attended by community members, elected officials and Rotary Club members from throughout East Hawaii.   Take a look at it the next time you are in Pahala town.

Several big boxes of medical supplies, childrenʻs clothing, books and toys collected by the Rotary Club of Volcano have reached their destination in the Philippines.  The oversized Balikbayan Boxes arrived at a municipal medical clinic in the town of Salvacion in July, all in good condition.   All the supplies in the boxes were donated by people in Volcano  and nearby areas and packed by Rotary Club members, then shipped to the Philippines.   “It feels like Christmas in July,” said one of the recipients.  A big shout out and thank you to all the community members who helped the Rotary Club of Volcano make this possible.
